If you want to know how to reverse money using your Capitec app, you should know it’s not always a quick fix. While it’s possible to undo some transactions directly in the app, not every payment can be reversed this way. Certain situations require you to visit your local Capitec branch for help. Knowing which payments are reversible on the app and which ones will need face-to-face assistance can make a big difference. In this post, we’ll walk you through the process of reversing payments on the app and explain when you’ll need to pop into the bank for further support.

You Can Dispute A Debit Order But Only If It’s Fraudulent

The Capitec app lets you reverse money, but only in specific situations. You should use this option if a debit order was approved without your permission, if you’re charged twice for a credit agreement, or if you made a mistake or were tricked into making a payment. It’s a useful feature, but it’s important to follow the right steps and understand what might happen when you dispute a debit order.

How to Dispute a Debit Order

If you’re ready to dispute a debit order, here’s how you do it

Step 1: Open the app and tap Transact

What Happens if the Debit is Valid?

Disputing a legitimate debit order can lead to some issues, so think it through before proceeding:

  • Services or insurance policies might be cancelled.
  • Missed instalments could hurt your credit score.
  • You may face extra costs from unpaid bills or debt collection.
  • Insurance premiums or interest rates might go up.
  • Future agreements could be harder to secure.

If the debit order you’re disputing is for less than R800, you can handle it directly through the app, and the money will reflect in your account instantly. For larger amounts, you’ll need to visit a branch for assistance.

A Personal Note

I once had to dispute a charge from an internet provider after I had already cancelled my contract. I went to a branch, and they sorted it out quickly—no hassles, no waiting. The money was back in my account right away.

Make sure you’re disputing for the right reasons to avoid unnecessary complications. The app makes it easy, but it’s always good to be informed before taking action.

It’s Not Possible To Reverse An EFT Payment On The App

If you send an EFT payment to the wrong account using the Capitec app, reversing it can be difficult (but not impossible). In one case shared on Maya on Money, a Capitec customer accidentally transferred money to the wrong account while trying to send it to his son. When he realised the mistake, he reached out to Capitec for help, but the bank couldn’t reverse the payment without the recipient’s approval. The case was closed after multiple failed attempts to contact the recipient, and the money was stuck—until Capitec eventually stepped in to resolve things.

Another story involved a person using FNB’s app who sent R2,500 to the wrong account. The money ended up in an Absa sub-account, and neither bank seemed willing to take responsibility, leaving her caught in a frustrating loop.

Charl Nel, Capitec’s head of communications, explained that customers can request a reversal by contacting the call centre. If the recipient has sufficient funds, the bank will seek their permission to reverse the payment. The funds can be returned to the sender once approved. However, without the recipient’s consent, it’s often a dead end.

Can You Reverse a Cash Send on the Capitec App?

If you’ve sent money using the Capitec app, reversing it isn’t an option. However, you can still recover the funds in two ways. First, you can withdraw the money from an ATM before the recipient does. Alternatively, if the cash remains unclaimed after 30 days, it will automatically return to your account.

If you’re unsure about anything, my advice is to visit a capital branch or contact their call centre at 0860 102 043. I sincerely hope you are able to recover your funds.
