China Town in Ottery: A Shopper’s Guide

China Town is where locals go bargain hunting.

Entrance to China Town in Ottery.

If you are heading to China Town in Ottery, it helps to know that this is not really a conventional shopping centre where you walk into a handful of big-name stores and leave. It is a collection of independent shops and wholesalers, spread across different sections, with a particularly broad mix of fashion, homeware, party supplies, beauty products, toys, hardware and other everyday goods. The official directory currently lists more than 40 shops at the Ottery location.

Driving directions to China Town in Ottery

How to drive there

The easiest way to approach the centre depends on where you are coming from, but Woodlands Road, Ottery, is the address to keep in your navigation app.

From the M5, head towards the Ottery area and follow your navigation towards Woodlands Road. If you are coming from the southern suburbs, you can approach via the local Ottery road network rather than making your way through the city.

From Plumstead and Diep River, the journey is relatively direct through the southern suburbs. From Lansdowne and Wetton, follow the roads towards Ottery and use Woodlands Road as your final destination.

From the Cape Town CBD, the M5 south is generally the straightforward route. Traffic can make a noticeable difference to the journey to China Town in Ottery, particularly during weekday peak periods, so check live navigation before leaving.

Is there parking?

Yes. There is parking at the centre.

This is worth knowing if you are planning a larger shopping trip. Several of the shops are located around the parking area, and the official store information uses the parking area and entrance booms to describe where certain shops can be found. For example, A3 is on the left as you enter through the booms, while A15 is in the furthest-left corner.

The layout means it is worth making a mental note of where you park. If you are visiting several stores, you may end up moving between different sections rather than staying in one continuous row of shops.

For bigger purchases, having your car nearby is also useful. The centre has stores selling homeware, hardware, luggage and other goods that are less convenient to carry around for long periods.

What can you buy?

Shops at China Town in Ottery are divided into categories including fashion and accessories, footwear, beauty and wigs, electronics, home decor, hardware and DIY, car parts, toys, stationery, arts and crafts, party supplies, luggage, food and wedding-related products.

There is also plenty of overlap between categories. A shop listed primarily as home decor, for example, may also sell toys, party supplies, clothing or blankets.

Homeware and household shopping

If you are setting up a home, replacing small household items or looking for inexpensive decorative pieces, this is one of the more useful sections to browse.

A14, for example, stocks homeware alongside party supplies, children’s toys, clothing, lingerie and blankets. That is a good illustration of why it is better not to assume that each store sticks rigidly to one category.

Fashion and accessories

There are numerous fashion stores at China Town in Ottery, rather than one large clothing retailer. The directory lists several Ottery shops under fashion and accessories, including A3, A4, A7, A8, A13, B26, B34, B35, B37, B38-1, B39 and B45.

A3, for instance, carries ethnic wear, denim, dresses and sun hats.

The advantage of having several independent stores is that you can compare styles and prices instead of being limited to one range.

Party supplies

Party shopping is another strong category. There are several dedicated party decor and fancy-dress shops, including A1, A5, A10, A12, A16 and B29.

This makes the centre particularly useful when you need several things for a birthday, celebration or themed event rather than just one item.

Beauty and hair products

For beauty shopping, A17 stocks hair products, nail products, nail lamps, makeup storage and perfumes. There is also B47 under the beauty and wigs category.

If you are looking for a particular brand or product, it is worth checking the packaging and product specifications carefully before buying, particularly with cosmetics and electrical beauty equipment.

Arts, crafts and stationery

There is a dedicated stationery and arts-and-crafts shop at B40, which stocks craft supplies, packaging boxes and baking accessories.

That makes it useful for more than school stationery. If you bake, make gifts, package products or work on DIY projects, this is one of the categories worth checking.

Car accessories and DIY

There is also a dedicated car parts and accessories shop at A15, while A18 and B27-B28 are listed under hardware and DIY.

This mix can make the centre handy for those small household or car-related purchases that do not justify a trip to a specialist retailer.

Can you buy wholesale?

Yes, and this is one of the more useful details for small businesses, event planners and people buying larger quantities.

The official website says wholesale prices may be available for bulk orders at the Ottery branch, but pricing is negotiated directly with individual store owners.

So if you are buying party supplies, packaging, clothing, accessories or other items in quantity, do not assume the displayed price is necessarily the final price. Ask the individual shop about bulk pricing.

There is an important limitation, though: China Town does not currently offer online shopping or delivery. Purchases need to be made in person.

Use the store directory before you go

One of the easiest ways to make your visit less chaotic is to check the official store directory first.

The Ottery directory identifies shops by codes such as A1, A2, A3 and B25, alongside their categories. This gives you a rough idea of where to start instead of wandering around the entire centre looking for one specific item.

The directory currently covers categories, including:

  • Fashion and accessories
  • Home decor
  • Electronics
  • Hardware and DIY
  • Toys and games
  • Beauty and wigs
  • Luggage and bags
  • Party decor and fancy dress
  • Food
  • Stationery and arts and crafts
  • Car parts and accessories

If you are shopping for a specific item, check the directory before setting off. Stock changes between stores, so it is still worth checking with the individual retailer if you need something very specific.

How the shopping experience works

This is probably the biggest difference between the centre and a conventional mall.

The stores tend to be densely stocked, with merchandise packed into relatively small spaces. You often need to walk through aisles, move between racks and ask an assistant if you cannot immediately find what you are looking for.

There is also a clear division between the shop floor and the till. Research into Chinese-owned retail stores in Cape Town has documented Chinese business owners working from the point of sale while African shop assistants handle much of the customer-facing work, including helping shoppers find products, checking items and restocking shelves.

That is worth mentioning because it explains something visitors notice quickly: the person helping you find an item may not be the person who completes the transaction.

Is it worth visiting?

That depends on what you are shopping for, but the centre makes the most sense when you need variety rather than a specific brand.

It is particularly useful for household purchases, party supplies, clothing, toys, accessories, beauty items, hardware and the assortment of small products that are difficult to categorise neatly. The ability to buy several unrelated things in one trip is one of its strongest advantages.

It is also worth visiting if you are buying in quantity. The possibility of negotiating wholesale prices at the Ottery branch gives businesses, event planners and people making larger purchases another reason to visit.

The important thing is to approach it differently from a standard mall. You are not walking into one retailer with a carefully curated range. You are entering a collection of independent businesses, each with its own stock, pricing and speciality.
