If you’re a student currently completing your National Certificate (Grade 12 or Matric), N1-N5, or a diploma, this is your chance to build real-world skills that go beyond the classroom. Graduates with National Diplomas, Degrees, or even higher qualifications can apply for internships that focus on skills transfer and growth.

 

What do you need?

 

To apply, there are a few requirements based on the programme you’re interested in. These include:

 

Skills Programme

 

This is for those who have completed Grade 10, 11, or Grade 12 (Matric) and are eager to gain practical exposure to the working world.

 

Work Integrated Learning (WIL)

 

If you’re studying and need practical experience to complete your qualification, this is for you. A letter from your institution requesting in-service training, along with your transcript, will be needed.

 

Graduate Internship

 

For those who have finished their National Diploma, Degree, or higher qualification. This programme helps you gain experience through full-time or part-time internships aimed at building your professional skills.

 

What will you gain?

 

Interns will get a chance to apply their academic knowledge in a real-world setting.

 

You’ll work on various projects, gaining exposure to different departments within the City. This is not about fetching coffee; you’ll be given tasks that will help you develop new skills and understand how different sectors operate.

 

While the experience you gain here is invaluable, remember that completing the internship does not automatically lead to a permanent job. But the skills you pick up will set you apart in the job market.

 

Will you be paid?

Yes. Interns will receive a stipend for their time and effort. The rate varies, ranging from R34.39 per hour to R54.06 per hour depending on the programme and available budget. While it’s not a full salary, it’s a helpful way to earn while you gain practical experience.

 

How to apply

 

Step 1: Start by signing up for e-Services and enabling the careers service to get started with your internship registration.

Step 2: After activating the service, you’ll need to build your online CV. This includes adding personal details, education and training, work experience, and any qualifications you hold.

Please upload a digital copy of the following documents:

• Your South African Identity Document or proof of South African Citizenship (affidavits won’t be accepted)
• A cover letter
• Qualifications like your matric certificate, diploma, or degree
• Any references

Step 3: Once your online CV is complete, head to our job search platform. Look for the internship you’re interested in and use the search filters to narrow down results to match your skills.

 

Things to keep in mind

 

• While you’re doing the internship, you won’t be allowed to take on any other work unless you have permission from the City’s Manager.
• If you’re already enrolled in further studies, you can’t be doing those while you’re completing your internship, except for PhD or Doctoral studies.
• The internship doesn’t guarantee permanent employment, but it’s a great way to get your foot in the door and gain experience.
