Spine Road High School has a lot to celebrate. This year marks 40 years since the school first opened, and its students have achieved a perfect pass rate to match the milestone. It’s a fitting way to honor the dedication of teachers, students, and the wider school community. Sharing the spotlight is Darul Arqam Islamic High School, which has managed to achieve 100% pass rates for two consecutive years.

To pass matric, the Department of Basic Education requires that students meet several criteria. These include obtaining at least 40% in their home language and two other subjects and securing at least 30% in three additional subjects. While this provides the foundation for further studies or career opportunities, many students push beyond the minimum, working hard to achieve higher grades.

As a community, we should feel inspired by what these students have accomplished. Some may have studied by candlelight, dodged gang shootings on their walk to school, or gone home to food insecurity. Still, they persevered. They put in the hard yards and have now claimed their reward – a National Senior Certificate.

The Western Cape recorded an 86.6% pass rate overall, slightly lower than the national figure of 87.3%. Yet, the achievements of these schools show how much effort is being put into supporting students in this region.
