History of Athlone Stadium

The stadium’s construction took place during the apartheid period. At that time, communities on the Cape Flats faced limited access to public facilities.

Most decent sports grounds were reserved for white South Africans. Athlone Stadium was one of the few big venues where people who were classified as “Coloured” could gather for sport and culture. At first, it was designed for athletics, but football soon became its main pull.

Santos Cape Town originally made it their home ground, and families flocked to matches week after week. For many, the stadium was a place to feel pride in local football talent and to share in the atmosphere of a packed crowd.

Transformation and Renovations

The 2010 World Cup pushed major investment into the stadium. It gained upgrades to its facilities, allowing it to serve as a recognised training base.

In 2025, the City of Cape Town began a public participation process on the possible disposal of part of the stadium’s parking area along Klipfontein Road.

The Economic Growth Directorate now wants to bring in phased development with retail and commercial use to refresh the precinct. The bigger vision is to shape Athlone Stadium into a busy hub where sport, culture, and enterprise connect, though the proposal has drawn concerns from different groups across the metro.
