Where In The World Are Dom Jan and Slim Jan?
Somebody once asked on social media: “I wonder how Dom Jan and Slim Jan are doing… They are probably all grown up now.”
It made me think about all the silly things we used to do and ghaai about growing up. By the way, why are we all so obsessed with nostalgia right now? Everywhere I look, people are posting throwback pictures, 90s trends are coming back, and everyone’s talking about simpler times. Maybe we’re all just longing for the days when life felt a little cheaper, a little safer, and a lot more carefree.
Dom Jan and Slim Jan are central characters in folk stories, often used for comedic effect. In Afrikaner culture, “Jan” is a widely used name derived from Johannes, and combining it with another word is a common way of creating nicknames. Dom Jan (Foolish Jan) is a character known for his silly actions, often surprising others with unexpected brilliance. On the other hand, Slim Jan (Wise Jan) is the clever, sharp-minded counterpart.
Here’s one joke (these jokes are told in Afrikaans) I came across:
Eendag gaan Dom Jan en Slim Jan om die boer se mielies uit sy stoor uit te steel maar hulle loop teen ‘n drom vas.
Die boer kom uit en skree: “Wie is daar?”
Slim Jan sê: “Meow!”
Die volgende wiek gaan hulle weer om mielies te steel en loop weer in die drom vas.
Die boer kom weer uit en vra: “Wie is daar?”
Dom Jan sê: “Meow dis die kat van laas wiek.”
Do kids even tell these kinds of flou jokes today? We used to tell them in school playgrounds, at sleepovers, anywhere we could find a few minutes of downtime. There was no need for fancy gadgets or streaming services. Just a few friends, a bag of 50c chips, and a ridiculous story about Dom Jan and Slim Jan—those were the best times.
Now that I’m thinking about it, those were the days when storytelling was just part of being with your friends. We didn’t think of it as storytelling, it was just what we did. Passing around those jokes, making new ones up, laughing about the same punchlines—it was simple, pure fun.
Maybe Dom Jan and Slim Jan are still out there, living on in the corners of old memories. Or maybe they’re just waiting for someone to bring them back, to remind us that humor doesn’t need Wi-Fi or TikTok—it just needs people, sitting together, sharing a laugh.
