National Teaching Awards Recognise Two Exceptional Cape Flats Teachers
The 2025 National Teaching Awards brought together educators who go the extra mile every single day.
The 2025 National Teaching Awards in Boksburg brought well-earned recognition to two Cape Flats teachers. Ammarah Ford-Pieters from Cedar Primary in Bonteheuwel received the award for Excellence in Teaching Life Skills.
The night also celebrated Belmor Primary’s Charnelle Arendse from Hanover Park, who received the Minister’s Special Award. Her learner, Jade Amos, wrote a heartfelt nomination that captured how much her teacher means to her.

The National Teaching Awards, run by the Department of Basic Education, celebrate teachers who go far beyond the call of duty. Many work in places where resources are tight, yet they still give their learners the best they can every day.
The Ministry of Basic Education aims to achieve the following through the National Teaching Awards:
- Shine a spotlight on the strengths and successes within Basic Education, enhancing the reputation of the teaching profession.
- Celebrate and encourage outstanding teaching practices and performance.
- Pay tribute to teachers and schools that show dedication, creativity, and impact.
- Promote and share effective methods that support excellence in schools.
- Strengthen learner wellbeing by recognising initiatives that break down barriers and foster resilience, especially among disadvantaged communities (Commonwealth Teachers Award).
- Foster a climate that attracts and maintains investment in education and learning (Commonwealth Teachers Award).
- Contribute to the broader goal of achieving Sustainable Development Goal 4 (Commonwealth Teachers Award).
- Support learners in reaching their long-term career aspirations by facilitating connections with relevant organisations and information sources (African Union Teachers’ Award).
- Give South African teachers the chance to compete and gain recognition at continental and global levels through the African Union Teachers’ Award, the Commonwealth Teachers’ Award, and the Global Teacher Prize.
- Provide the nation with a platform to express gratitude and appreciation for exceptional teachers and school teams.
We would like to congratulate Miss Ford-Pieters and Miss Arendse on their well-deserved awards.
