Retired Traffic Officer André Rautenbach Shares Story Behind Cape Town Baby Rescue in New Book

More than 25 years after a dramatic baby rescue captured the hearts of South Africans, the traffic officer at the centre of that extraordinary moment has shared his story in a newly released book.
André Rautenbach has published Fifteen Minutes That Changed Everything: Darkness Leads to Ultimate Glory, a deeply personal account that goes far beyond the events that made headlines in May 2000. Rather than focusing solely on the rescue itself, the book explores the faith, purpose and life experiences that Rautenbach believes prepared him for one of Cape Town’s most unforgettable moments.
For many South Africans, the image of Rautenbach carrying an eight-month-old baby to safety remains etched in memory. It became a symbol of hope during a case that had gripped the country from the moment the child disappeared.
The events unfolded on 3 May 2000 when an eight-month-old baby was abducted from outside his family home in Camps Bay. As news of the kidnapping spread, residents, security companies, emergency services and members of the public joined an urgent citywide search.
Rautenbach, who was serving as a traffic officer at the time, heard the alert over his radio while on duty. Soon afterwards, he noticed a white BMW travelling without number plates. Something about the vehicle raised his suspicions and he decided to follow it.
The pursuit continued through Cape Town, with information shared between responders and assistance coming from members of the public, while a police helicopter monitored developments from above.
The chase eventually led to an abandoned vehicle in Bo-Kaap. When Rautenbach searched the car, he heard the sound of a baby crying. The child had been hidden beneath the front passenger seat and, although bruised, was alive.
Rautenbach has often said that his only concern throughout the ordeal was returning the baby safely to his parents.
His new book also reflects on another life-changing experience that happened decades earlier. As a young boy, he nearly drowned before being pulled from the sea by a stranger on a surfboard. Looking back, Rautenbach believes that moment spared his life for a greater purpose, one he says only became clear years later.
Today, Rautenbach lives in Kraaifontein after previously serving in Mitchells Plain. Through his first book, he offers readers a deeply personal perspective on faith, courage and the events that forever changed his life.
