Walking through the Bo-Kaap on a Saturday now includes a stop at the newly opened Bo-Kaap Market.
The Bo-Kaap Market opened on Saturday, 14 February, at the intersection of Pentz Street and Yusuf Drive. For those who spent their morning there, the scene was far from the usual tourist routine.
The first day kicked off with a Kaapse Klopse troupe performing for the crowd, their brass instruments and bright outfits providing a classic Cape Town welcome. Even Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis and Cllr Francine Higham came through to support the launch.
With about six stall spaces to browse, the variety covers the essentials and the unique. You can pick up fresh seafood, seasonal fruit, spices, and vegetables, or browse through racks of colourful clothing and scarves.
The food is set to become a major draw, featuring local savouries such as samosas and koesisters and Cape Malay recipes that have remained in families for decades.
Because this is now a weekend fixture, the Bo-Kaap market provides a platform for traders to earn a living within their own neighbourhood. It allows residents to buy what they need from people they know. Visitors can experience the real Bo-Kaap by interacting with the people who call it home.
The Bo-Kaap is home to South Africa’s earliest Coloured Muslim community and a place where old social traditions are still very much alive. The opening of the market is an invitation to walk the streets, meet the people, and take home a piece of authentic Cape Town history.
