Hanover Park is a densely populated residential area, covering just 2.09 km² with a population of 34,625 people recorded in the 2011 Census. That gives it a very high population density of about 16,554 people per km². There were 6,962 households in the area.
The community had a slightly higher female population (52.5%) compared to males (47.5%). The area also had a notably young population, with nearly half of residents under the age of 25. The biggest age groups were children and teenagers, particularly those aged 0–19.
In terms of population groups, Hanover Park was overwhelmingly Coloured, making up 96.5% of residents. Black African residents accounted for 2.4%, while Indian/Asian, White, and other groups together made up less than 1.5% of the population.

History of Hanover Park
The origin of the name Hanover is believed to have more than one possible source. It may trace back to the well-known Hanover Street in District 6, or it could be connected to King William IV, who spent his formative years in a residence known as Hanover. William IV ruled as King of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, as well as King of Hanover, from 26 June 1830 until he died in 1837. Adding to this connection, the William IV Rifle Range was situated in the vicinity of what is today known as Hanover Park.
Long before the area took on any of these names, the land was home to the San people, who wandered the foothills and later became its traditional custodians.
In 1860, a German family received a grant of this land and established what they called Greyhill Farm. This family, along with other German immigrants, settled and farmed the Cape Flats after being personally invited by the then-Governor X Merriman. A German Lutheran church dating back to that era still stands today on the boundary between Hanover Park and the neighbouring area of Philippi.
The Blomvlei River once ran freely through the area. Today, it has been largely channelled underground beneath Blomvlei Road.
Hanover Park was formally incorporated into the City of Cape Town on 14 August 1958.
From 1970 onward, families forcibly removed from District 6, Woodstock, Oakdale, Constantia, Simonstown and Parow under the Group Areas Act were resettled here, where they endured overcrowded living conditions and were compelled to pay rent.
Hanover Park became a community that stood at the forefront of the anti apartheid school boycotts, playing a meaningful role in the broader UDF and Western Cape struggle to liberate South Africa from apartheid’s stranglehold. The community’s library hall was made available for gatherings of banned political organisations and clandestine meetings. Using a chess club as a cover, for instance, a youth cell of the PAC-aligned Muslim political movement known as Qibla held meetings under the guidance of activist Ahmed Cassim. Qibla drew on what was described as an uncompromisingly revolutionary reading of the Quran, and while it opposed the UDF’s strategy, it maintained sympathetic ties with both the NEUM and the Black Consciousness movement.
On 19 April 1985, learners at Oaklands Senior Secondary School joined students across the peninsula in a one-day boycott to protest the Uitenhage shootings, in which an estimated 43 people lost their lives on 21 March 1985, as reported by the Cape Times on 20 April 1985.
In 2011, Hanover Park recorded a population of just 305 people. By 2022, that number had grown dramatically to 34,625.
