An 18-year-old matric learner named Jayden has opened up about living alone in a shack in Kimberley, Northern Cape, as he works towards completing his final year of school.
Jayden recently shared a glimpse of his living conditions in a TikTok vlog, where he gave viewers a tour of his modest corrugated-metal home. He explained that he has been living on his own for six months and plans to remain there until he finishes matric.

Although he has grown accustomed to being alone from a young age, the teenager admits that independent living comes with its share of challenges. While the peace and solitude can be comforting, he says in his vlog that spending every day alone can sometimes become overwhelming. He also occasionally feels like an outcast and misses having his family close by.
Jayden’s mother lives in Middelburg, and he has not seen her in years. His aunt, who lives in Johannesburg, has played a significant role in his life and has cared for him since he was three years old. He describes her as a mother figure and hopes to reconnect with his family once he completes matric.
His decision to move from Johannesburg to Kimberley was driven by the difficult environment he experienced in the city. Jayden feared that remaining there could expose him to gangsterism and put his life at risk. Moving offered him an opportunity to focus on his education and work towards a different future.
Despite the challenges he faces, Jayden remains determined to finish school and pursue tertiary education. He hopes to secure a place at university and live in a residence, where he can continue his studies while experiencing a different environment.
Jayden has also appealed to people in Kimberley to help him find employment after matric, as he prepares for the next stage of his life.
His story has resonated with social media users, many of whom have praised his determination and encouraged him to keep pursuing his goals. For Jayden, completing matric represents more than finishing school. It is a step towards greater independence, new opportunities and the chance to reunite with the family he misses.
We wish him all the best with matric, hope the doors to university open for him, and pray that brighter days, exciting opportunities and success await him. Keep going, Jayden!
