Rebrands are tricky. For every refresh that lands well, there’s one that leaves supporters scratching their heads. Think back to Jaguar’s clean but polarising logo update, or closer to home, the Pep rebrand that had South Africans wondering why the familiar had to be stripped back in the first place. Change in design often aims to modernise a brand, but it doesn’t always spark the response its creators hope for.
The Stormers this week revealed their new logo, calling it the start of a fresh era. The centrepiece is a circular badge built from the hoops of their famous jersey, bound together with a bolt of lightning through the middle. The outline borrows from DHL Stadium, a nod to the team’s Cape Town home.
Management described it as an identity that carries the pride of supporters, players, staff, and sponsors. CEO Johan le Roux spoke about the old emblem being over 25 years old, and how this moment felt right for something new. John Dobson, as always, tied it back to the people, saying the team’s mission is to “make Cape Town smile.” Around that idea, they’ve launched a campaign titled “In it together,” leaning into community and connection.
Plenty of creative firepower was brought in to shape it. Local agencies, filmmakers, and musicians were involved, with the hope that the logo and the campaign could live outside rugby and into the city’s culture. The aim was bold: to make the Stormers not only a rugby side but a symbol of Cape Town’s spirit.
The attachment to the familiar runs deep, and when symbols carry so much weight, swapping them out comes with risk. Social media has been buzzing since the reveal, and the first wave of comments has leaned heavily towards disappointment.
Social media reactions to the new Stormers logo
Looks like a new type of toilet paper
Someone who passed with 30% must’ve got a tender to design this logo.
It it for a Whirlpool washing machine or a tornado warning?
In plain afrikaans. It looks KAK.
Looks like they got a designer off Temu.
From a storm to a dwarel windjie.
Very sad day. First Newlands and now this. RIP my beloved memories.
We were definitely not “in it together” when you came up with that logo.
We are In It Together, collectively we are all bonding over the hatred of this rebrand that nobody asked for.
