The Funniest Nicknames for Coloured Guys
Growing up coloured, you were bound to get a nickname at some point. They’re playful and creative – whether it was based on something you did, something you said, or just your general personality. Instead of calling a guy Warren, we call him Wakes. And Peter becomes Pikes. Even Charlton gets a new name, Challas.
But the coloured community takes nicknames to a whole new level. These funny nicknames for guys were given after their feet, their privates, their heads or their ears. Voete got his name because his feet were either big or smelly. And Piele, well you can guess where that comes from! Some guys are called Koppe or Ore because of the distinct nature of their said body parts. And then there’s Boeta, Lange, Lippe, Bolle, Wange, Pang, Boere, Kleintjie, Hare, Ballas. Don’t forget about Oupa, Manne, Ballie, Skouers, Tollie or Bek…the list goes on and on.
We even use food and animals, among others, to nickname someone. So you’ve got guys walking around called Donkie, Tamatie, Mango, Sop, and Patat. Some of these guys I’ve met in real life.
Honestly, who else comes up with nicknames like we do? They’re funny, sometimes brutal, but they highlight what makes us special, not perfect.
