Growing up in Elsies River on the Cape Flats, Taz Lucas learned resilience before she learned much else. It’s a lesson she says now underpins everything: her strength, her softness, and the authenticity she brought to her breakout role as Officer Dawn in Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing.
At 32 and a mother of two daughters, Taz’s path to acting wasn’t a straight line. She started behind the camera as a photographer, a craft she credits with teaching her how to truly see people: their light, their timing and their truth. Acting, she says, wasn’t something she chased. It arrived when she was ready for it.
Taz didn’t go through a conventional casting process to land the role of Officer Dawn. Director Nic Mathee saw something in her before she could recognise it herself. Rather than creating a character from scratch, she simply leaned into who she already was.
“I didn’t have to become her. I just had to be honest,” she says of stepping into Officer Dawn’s shoes.
As the only female police officer among a cast of strong personalities, Taz says she felt something unexpected: powerful, feminine and completely herself. The experience reinforced a belief she carries beyond the role that softness is its own kind of strength.
A Story That Reflected Her Own
For Taz, the heart of Wolf in Sheep’s Clothing isn’t found in a single line of dialogue but in the journey her character takes. Watching Officer Dawn stand firm in difficult moments reminded her of her own life. She describes the film as a mirror, showing that reclaiming your power doesn’t have to come from bitterness. Sometimes, she says, it comes through healing, growth and choosing to keep moving forward.
One reshoot scene became a turning point both on and off the screen. Taz says the shootout sequence, which was filmed multiple times until it felt right, reminded her that she has the strength to protect what matters most and stand her ground without losing her softness.
She also credits director Nic Mathee with creating an environment where the cast could be genuine rather than simply perform. That authenticity, she says, is why Officer Dawn never felt like just another character.
Building Beyond Acting
Acting is only one part of the bigger picture Taz is creating. She describes herself as a gifting entrepreneur, home cook, storyteller, poet and mother, someone learning to pour from a cup that overflows because she chose to fill herself first.
That entrepreneurial journey is also entering a new chapter. Her gifting business, The Boxed Effect Gifting House, is currently being rebranded and is preparing to open its first brick-and-mortar store, giving customers the opportunity to experience the brand in person.
She’s also preparing to launch a new vlog series, The Becoming of Taz, which she describes as raw, honest and intentional, giving viewers a closer look at her life beyond the screen.
Looking ahead, Taz confirms she will appear in another project scheduled for 2027 and will continue collaborating with Nic Mathee on future productions. It’s a full-circle moment for someone who remembers asking herself as a child, “What if I become an actress?” Today, she says, she’s finally living the answer.
A Message to Her Community
Despite everything she’s accomplished, Taz keeps returning to where her journey began. She hopes to see healing within her community and believes that breaking generational cycles begins with intentional choices. Rather than continuing to pour from an empty cup, she encourages people to choose restoration, growth and hope.
“As much for my community as it is for myself, every choice plants a seed. The foundation you’re given is only the starting point. What you build from there, and what you pass on, is up to you,” says Lucas.
“Your dream is valid,” she adds. “And your becoming is worth it.”
