Let’s Take a Tour Through Elsies River

Elsies River is part of Cape Town’s Northern Suburbs, around 18 to 21 kilometres from the city centre. A quick drive takes you into a suburb rich with working-class character and layered history. Surrounded by areas like Goodwood, Bishop Lavis, Matroosfontein, Epping, and Cravenby, Elsies River sits in the middle of a busy, well-connected pocket of the Cape Flats. The majority of residents identify as Coloured or Black African, with Afrikaans being the most spoken language at home, followed by English.

A Bit of History of Elsies River

Elsies River, or simply Elsies as locals call it, carries a name that likely comes from Elsje van Suurwaarde, a farmer who worked the land back in the late 1600s. Baptised in 1662, Elsje managed her farm with determination and lived a full life. After her passing, her land was handed over to new owners through the years.

By the mid-1800s, Elsies River had become an important stop on the Transatlantic Rail line coming from Cape Town Central. It was known as a halt, a place where people travelling by wagon would gather to meet the train. Halt Road still stands today as a reminder of this. Back then, the Elsies Kraal River provided fresh water for horses, and the Arcadia Coffee House gave travellers a place to rest and recharge.

As the years passed, more people began settling in the area. Landowners like William Walthen and Gideon Hoffmeyer, who arrived in 1846 and 1879, started renting out land. Many Coloured families moved in and set up their homes, often using wood from the area to build shacks and informal dwellings. The Elsies Kraal River offered water for drinking, washing and household needs.

The Great Depression of the 1920s brought another wave of people into Elsies River, especially from rural parts of the country. Areas such as Clarke Estate, Avondale Estate and Eureka Estate started to take shape. Back then, extended families often lived close together in sections affectionately called “die bos” which means “the bush”, but actually referred to a clan or large family group. For example, the area where the Braaf family lived was known as “Braaf se bos”.
