Judy Boucher and Robin S Bring the Yaad Vibes With Soul Sister

It’s going to be a night full of the sounds some of us grew up with and still carry with us today.

On the Cape Flats, there’s a special place in people’s hearts for old-school tunes. And there are two artists who always make the playlist at a social gathering.

One is the unmistakable voice of Judy Boucher, and the other is the beat of Robin S. Around here, we call them yaad songs — the kind of tunes we play while hanging out in the front or back yard, surrounded by family, friends, neighbours, and braai smoke.

Judy Boucher’s music plays the same role on the Cape Flats as Mariah Carey’s Christmas album does everywhere else. You know it’s December when someone plays “Can’t Be With You Tonight”. But her music doesn’t wait for the holidays. She’s a regular feature at parties and family functions year-round. Judy Boucher usually shows up later in the night when the dop has everyone in a vibe. People start singing along, the aunties close their eyes, and someone always says, “Yoh, this one reminds me of…”. Her songs bring out memories, the kind that make people smile through tears or get up and slow dance in the middle of the kitchen.

Robin S brings a different kind of energy. Her music is made for dancefloors, club lights and karaoke speakers. Her anthem “What I Do Best” became even more loved locally when Cape Town’s own Salome gave it her spin.

Now, both these legends are set to take the stage in Cape Town for a one-night-only event called Soul Sisters. Catch them live on 27 September 2025 at GrandWest Casino and Entertainment World. And they’re not coming alone. Local talents like Karin Kortje, Claire Phillips, Jamali, Vicky Sampson, Andrea Fortuin, Carletha, Ramaine Barreiro Lloyd and Leonee Leroux will all be performing too, backed by Dillon Roman’s seven-piece band.

Judy Boucher and Robin S will be performing all the songs people have been singing along to for years. If old school music means something to you, it’s going to be a great night out. Or treat your mother, aunty or granny who grew up with their music. Tickets are available from Ticketmaster.

Where will Judy Boucher and Robin S perform?

Judy Boucher and Robin S take the stage at the Grand Arena inside the GrandWest Casino and Entertainment World. The Grand Arena is one of the biggest venues in the city. It can hold 5 000 seated or 7 000 standing. Artists like Nicki Minaj and Boyz II Men have performed there before, so it’s well equipped for top-quality sound and lights.

About Judy Boucher

Caribbean singer Judy Boucher grew up in St. Vincent and found her voice in reggae and R&B. She started performing with her brother’s band before going solo. In 1985, she recorded “Dreaming of a Little Island,” which topped the reggae charts and was used by the Jamaica Tourist Board. This song put her on the map and led to her album release.

Her 1987 single “Can’t Be with You Tonight” became a hit across the UK, reaching number two on the charts. It gained attention after being played by exercise presenter Lizzie Webb, which helped it catch on with a wider audience. Judy toured several countries, including Belgium, where she performed for tens of thousands of fans, and Africa, where she was warmly received even though she couldn’t perform in South Africa due to the political boycott.

She followed up with “You Caught My Eye,” which also did well in the UK. Though she paused her music career briefly, Judy’s legacy as a trailblazer for Caribbean women in the music scene lives on, and she remains a proud ambassador for her homeland.

About Robin S

Robin Jackson Maynard, known to fans as Robin S., made a splash in the early 90s with her debut single “Show Me Love.” Originally released in 1990, the track gained real momentum after a remix by Swedish producer StoneBridge in 1993. This version soared into the charts, reaching number five on the Billboard Hot 100 and topping the dance charts. Robin’s unique voice helped her stand out in house music, earning her several number one dance hits.

Her debut album, also called Show Me Love, brought a string of successful singles and earned her a spot performing at the American Music Awards in 1994. After a break focusing on songwriting, she returned with her second album From Now On in 1997, which blended dance beats with gospel and R&B influences. Songs like “It Must Be Love” and “Midnight” topped dance charts and showed her range beyond house music.

Robin’s music found a special connection with European audiences, where she toured successfully in 2004 and beyond. She’s kept performing and recording, with recent collaborations hitting number one on US dance charts and new music on the way through an independent label.
