Smash and grab crimes are fast, violent, and targeted. A thief smashes a car window, grabs items, and is gone in seconds. They strike when vehicles are stopped or moving slowly, often at traffic lights.
The shock of breaking glass can freeze a driver long enough for the thief to take handbags, laptops, or mobile phones from the seat. Between July 2024 and May 2025, Cape Town’s Metro Police CCTV system recorded 215 of these incidents. Offenders look for cars with visible valuables, making anything in plain sight a potential target.
When Do Smash-And-Grab Incidents Occur?
Smash-and-grab incidents are likely to happen late in the day, particularly at weekends. Offenders often watch for drivers who seem worn out from work or laid-back after leisure plans. A driver glancing at a phone or unwrapping food is less likely to notice someone approaching.
Rush-hour traffic traps vehicles, making movement difficult and escape impossible. The situation worsens when bags, devices, or shopping lie visible on seats. Criminals act in seconds, exploiting the perfect storm of distraction, congestion, and visible possessions. The timing is rarely random – it’s about finding the moment when the driver is least prepared to react.

Reduce Your Risk Of Becoming A Victim Of Smash-And-Grab
Keep valuables out of sight: Smash-and-grab thefts are often opportunistic crimes. If a thief can see a laptop bag, handbag, mobile phone, or other valuables on your seat, you become an easy target. Place these items in the boot before setting off, or keep them on the floor of the car, covered.
Be aware of your surroundings: Pay attention to who is around your vehicle, especially when you are stopped at traffic lights or a junction. Watch for people loitering or approaching your car.
Keep your windows and doors locked: This simple step is an effective deterrent. A locked door makes it more difficult and time-consuming for a thief to reach you or your belongings.
Leave space between your car and the vehicle in front: When stationary at lights or in traffic, leave enough room to manoeuvre your car and drive away if you feel threatened.
Avoid using your phone in your car: Using your phone while stopped makes you a distracted target. A thief could smash your window and snatch your phone before you realise what’s happening.
Consider tinting your car windows: Tinted windows make it harder for a thief to see inside your car, reducing the chance you’ll be targeted.
Install a car alarm or anti-smash-and-grab film: An alarm can deter a thief or draw attention to the crime, while protective film makes it more difficult to break a window and grab your valuables.
Know your route: Where possible, avoid driving through high-crime areas or places known for smash-and-grabs, particularly at night. If you can, take an alternative route.
Don’t resist: If you become a victim of a smash-and-grab, do not fight back. Your safety is more important than your possessions. Let the thief take what they want, then drive to a safe location and call the police immediately.
