Swimming Pool Buying, Installation and Maintenance Guide

Assessing Your Space and Size Requirements

Before you even start checking out swimming pool prices, take a proper look at your yard.

One of the first things to think about with an above-ground pool is the size. Measure your available space carefully — and don’t just focus on where the pool will sit.

You’ll need a few feet of open space all the way around it. This “buffer zone” gives you room to move, clean, and maintain the pool safely.

If the space is too tight, the pool will feel cramped and awkward to manage. Think about the shape too — round pools are often sturdier, while rectangular ones can fit better in a narrow garden.

Getting the Base Right

Once it’s full, an above-ground pool weighs a lot, so the base needs to be solid and level. Don’t try to balance one side with extra soil or bricks — that never ends well.

The ground should be clear of stones, roots, and anything sharp. Most people go with a layer of fine building sand that’s been compacted flat. It cushions the liner and stops anything from poking through.

If the pool’s going to stay up for a while, it’s worth adding paving slabs or a ground cloth for extra protection. Take your time with this part. A rushed job here can cause cracks, leaks, or bigger issues later.

The Pump and Filtration System

Always get a pool with a pump and filter — or buy them together if they come separate.

It might look like you’re saving money, but you’ll end up with green water in no time. The pump keeps the water moving. The filter picks up the dirt. Check how much water the pump can handle per hour — it should match the size of your pool.

Cartridge filters are fine for smaller setups. For bigger pools or long-term use, sand filters do a better job and need less cleaning. Keep the pump on a dry, flat spot that’s not too close to where the water splashes.

Filling the Pool

Once everything’s ready, the next question is how to fill it. In Cape Town, that takes a bit of planning. Most people fill up using household water, which is billed at the municipal rate.

For big pools, or if you’re trying to save on your usage, you can order water from private suppliers instead. It’s not drinking water, but it’s perfectly safe for swimming.

Shop around before booking — just like swimming pool prices can vary quite a bit, so can the cost of water delivery.

Cost to Fill Your Pool With Municipal Water

A 366 cm diameter, 76 cm deep round above-ground pool holds approximately 10,181 litres of water.

As of July 2025, Cape Town’s residential water tariffs are tiered. For usage between 0 and 6 kilolitres (6,000 litres), the rate is R24.32 per kilolitre, including VAT.

Filling the pool would therefore cost approximately R246.15.
However, if your monthly water consumption exceeds 6 kilolitres, the rate increases to R49.96 per kilolitre for usage between 10.5 and 35 kilolitres.

In this case, filling the pool would cost approximately R508.99, which you should count toward your budget in addition to swimming pool prices.

Cleaning and Chemicals for Water Maintenance

A clean pool looks good and feels better to swim in. The trick is staying on top of it.

Keeping the water clean takes a bit of routine. You’ll need to run the pump and filter every day for around 6 to 8 hours. You’ll also want a few basics — a skimmer net to scoop out leaves and a brush for the sides and bottom.

For sanitising, chlorine is the usual choice, but there are other options if you prefer. The main thing is keeping the balance right so the water stays clear and safe.

Safety First: Covers and Access

Pools are fun, but safety comes first, especially if you’ve got kids around. A solid safety cover is the easiest way to stop anyone from getting in when you’re not there. Look for one that’s sturdy enough to hold a child’s weight and can be locked in place.

If your pool has a ladder, take it out or secure it upright when you’re done swimming. And always teach your kids about water safety — it’s just as important as keeping an eye on them.

How Often to Refill

If you’re looking after your pool, you won’t need to empty it much.

With the right balance of chemicals and regular filtering, the water can last for a month or two of normal use. You’ll just need to top it up every so often to make up for evaporation or splash-out.

If things go off track — say the water turns green and can’t be fixed — you’ll have to drain it, clean it, and start over. Regular care helps you avoid that headache.
