When the South African Chin Woo Kungfu Team — The BlitzFus — boarded their flights to Hong Kong, they were already working against the odds. Their final weeks of preparation had been observed during Ramadan, and travel disruptions across the Middle East made the journey longer and more draining than it needed to be. None of that showed up in their results.
At the 21st Hong Kong International Wushu Kungfu Championship, held at Ma On Shan Sports Centre, they finished in the top five among twenty-two competing nations and brought home nine gold medals and four silver medals. That is thirteen medals total, from a team that flew across the world when the stakes were already at their highest.
Shifu Muhammad Junaid Chafeker, aka M.J.Li, is a World Champion, a Hall of Fame inductee, and the driving force behind this team. At this championship, he competed in the Professional Adults Division and recorded the highest scores of any foreign athlete at the entire event, earning three gold medals.
Global organisers acknowledged the strength of South African leadership by officially appointing M.J.Li as the International Wushu Kungfu Ambassador in Hong Kong, a position that places him at the centre of promoting the sport internationally.
Young martial artists Muhammad Saifullah Chafeker and Luqmaan Slarmie each finished spectacularly with three gold medals and two silver medals. They competed in four disciplines: San Da Chinese Kickboxing, Individual Forms and Weapons, Duel Events, and Group Team Events.
Team Manager Salma Natalie Doran received the Best Foreign Team Manager award, completing a sweep of recognition that stretched well beyond the competition floor.
Saifullah and Luqmaan are due back in Cape Town on 31 March. M.J.Li and Salma Natalie Doran are currently in mainland China continuing a Master’s Programme in Integrative Medicine Clinical Practice, and will return on 15 April 2026.
Cape Town hosts the 4th Africa International Youth Kungfu Championships on 25 and 26 April at Fairbairn College Multi-Purpose Hall, Goodwood. Seven African nations will be competing. The BlitzFus will be defending champions on their own turf.
