Cape Town has long been a city where culture pulses through its streets. Nowhere is that energy felt with greater force than in its breakdancing scene.
Emile YX? is a legendary Cape Town hip-hop pioneer whose influence on the city’s urban arts culture is immeasurable. As a founding member of Prophets of da City and a lifelong champion of Cape Flats youth culture, Emile YX? helped establish breakdancing as a form of empowerment, identity, and resistance โ a language spoken through the body in communities where other outlets were few. His vision seeded a generation of movers, and that generation has produced some of the most technically gifted, creatively bold B-Boys and B-Girls on the Cape Flats.
Today, you can watch the kids put on a show in neighbourhood parks and sun-bleached courts. Regional competitions draw crowds at the Waterfront, where circles form, and reputations are built. Community halls host cyphers that run deep into the night. The culture spreads organically, mentor to student, elder to youth โ exactly as hip-hop intended.

B-Boy Toufeeq
Toufeeq Baatjies, aka B-boy Toufeeq, is a breaker from Mitchellโs Plain in Cape Town, representing Tough Nation Crew and earning respect across South Africaโs scene. He first made a major impact by winning the Red Bull BC One South Africa Cypher in 2015, and later returned to the top by claiming the title again in 2023 and 2024. These wins secured him spots at the Red Bull BC One World Final, including competing in Paris against top global talent. While specific world rankings are less clear, his consistent national success and repeated appearances on the world stage position him as one of Cape Townโs most established and competitive breakers.
B-Boy Shady
Chay โB-Boy Shadyโ Botman is a young breakdancer from Parktown on the Cape Flats in Cape Town, part of a new wave coming through the local scene. Heโs competed in events like Red Bull Dance Your Style and the Fujifilm Instax Undisputed battles, and has set his sights on international platforms such as the Notorious IBE festival in the Netherlands. One of his standout results is winning the Western Cape leg of the Breaking for Gold Olympic qualifiers and going on to place fourth at the national finals. While he hasnโt secured a major international breaking title yet, heโs a crowd favourite locally and has also claimed a world title at the UDO Championships in another street dance category. B-Boy Shady qualified for and competed at the Fujifilm Instax UNDISPUTED World Final in Tokyo (March 2026).
B-Girl Keisha
Lakeisha Dick, known as B-Girl Keisha, is a breakdancer from Ocean View in Cape Town, South Africa. She rose through the Cape Town cypher scene and became one of the countryโs standout B-girls, winning the Red Bull BC One South Africa Final in 2019 at just 13 years old, a landmark national title for female breakers from the Cape Flats. She went on to repeat that achievement in 2023, winning the South African Cypher again and earning another place on the world stage.
B-Boy The Curse
B-boy Curse (Brandon Petersen) is a Cape Town-based breaker whoโs been one of South Africaโs most consistent competitors in the Red Bull BC One circuit. He first made major waves by winning the South African Cypher in 2012, then repeated titles in 2013, 2015, 2016 and again in 2022, making him a four-time champion. Internationally, he represented South Africa at the Red Bull BC One Middle East Africa Finals in Morocco (2012) and Jordan (2013), and went on to compete at the World Finals in Nagoya in 2016 and New York in 2022. He also featured in Cape Townโs 2023 Break The Beat event against Toufeeq.
B-Boy Meaty
B-Boy Meaty, real name Dmitri Wayne Nell, is a professional breaker from Eerste River in Cape Town, Western Cape. He has been active in the South African breaking scene for more than a decade and is widely recognised for his strong footwork and battle consistency.
His most confirmed competitive achievement came in 2017, when he won the Red Bull BC One South Africa Cypher, defeating B-Boy Bashi in the final at the V&A Waterfront in Cape Town, earning the national title and a place at the Red Bull BC One World Final in Amsterdam that same year.
He has since remained a recurring figure in the Red Bull BC One ecosystem, including being listed among South Africaโs top breakers selected for international-level Red Bull BC One competition formats, such as the 2020 e-battle Top 64 representing South Africa on the global stage.
Within the South African scene, Meaty is consistently mentioned alongside the countryโs leading breakers such as B-Boy The Curse and B-Boy Toufeeq, and is regarded as part of the core group that has represented the Cape Town and Eerste River breaking community at national level competitions.
