Where to Go Bowling in Cape Town for a Fun Day or Night Out

PUBLISHED IN:LeisurePlaces

Bowling in Cape Town gives you two very different places to lace up, pick a ball and see who can avoid the gutter. GrandWest Casino and Entertainment World in Goodwood has 12 lanes inside its larger entertainment complex, while Let’s Entertain U at Stadium on Main in Claremont takes a more compact, social approach with food and other activities close at hand.

Both venues cater for casual players, so you do not need to arrive with a bowling league trophy tucked under your arm. The bigger decision comes down to location, budget, group size and what you want to do before or after the game.

GrandWest Casino and Entertainment World

GrandWest’s ten-pin bowling sits within The Magic Company entertainment area and has 12 lanes. The lanes can switch to Cosmic Lighting, which turns the bowling area into a glow-in-the-dark game with UV effects, music and illuminated surroundings.

It is a particularly handy choice for families because bowling can form one part of a much longer outing. The complex also has an ice rink, arcade entertainment, laser tag, a cinema and a large selection of restaurants and quick-service food outlets.

GrandWest bowling prices

The current listed bowling rates are:

  • Monday to Thursday: R65 per person, per game
  • Friday to Sunday: R85 per person, per game
  • The R65 weekday rate excludes public and school holidays.
  • Booking charges are not included in the advertised game price.

For a family of four bowling on a regular Saturday, the four games would therefore cost R340 before any applicable booking charges or food.

What you get at GrandWest

GrandWest has a straightforward bowling setup with 12 lanes, bowling balls, seating and bowling shoes. The venue also has Cosmic Lighting for glow bowling.

Other entertainment in the same complex includes:

  • The Magic Company arcade
  • Laser tag
  • The Ice Station
  • CineCentre
  • Kids’ entertainment
  • Restaurants and fast-food outlets
  • Bars and lounges
  • Ample parking within the wider GrandWest complex

For corporate groups, Magic Bowling is specifically promoted for team-building and corporate functions. Groups should arrange their booking ahead of time rather than relying on a walk-in lane during busy periods.

GrandWest bowling rules and need-to-knows

A few practical points can save you some frustration:

  • The price is charged per person, per game, rather than per lane.
  • Busy periods can mean a wait for a lane, so groups should book ahead.
  • Booking charges are separate from the advertised bowling rate.
  • Bowling shoes are part of the venue setup, so you do not need to arrive with your own bowling shoes.
  • Cosmic Lighting can be requested through the Help Desk.
  • Public and school holidays do not qualify for the cheaper R65 weekday rate.

As with any ten-pin venue, keep food and drinks away from the lane area, wait for the lane system to clear before bowling and let the staff handle technical problems rather than stepping onto neighbouring lanes.

Where to eat at GrandWest

This is where GrandWest has a clear advantage. You can eat without leaving the complex.

For a sit-down meal, choices currently listed at GrandWest include Casa Bella, Cape Town Fish Market, Thava, Shun De, The Hussar Grill, Silver Dollar Spur, The Quarterdeck Restaurant and Tiger’s Milk.

For a faster meal, The Cape Village food court has outlets such as Burger King, Debonairs, KFC, Nando’s, Steers, Wimpy, Mochachos, Milky Lane, Bootlegger and others.

That makes it easy to turn a one-hour bowling trip into an afternoon or evening without driving somewhere else for lunch.

Let’s Entertain U

Let’s Go Bowling at Stadium on Main takes a more entertainment-centre approach. The venue has synthetic lanes, QubicaAMF Edge string machines and an entertainment scoring system.

It is located on the lower ground floor of Stadium on Main in Claremont, close to Cavendish Square. The bowling centre forms part of Let’s Entertain U, so you can combine bowling with other activities rather than treating the lanes as the entire outing.

One useful booking detail: the venue does not generally accept bookings by telephone. Online bookings are the standard route. Walk-in groups can also be accommodated.

Let’s Go Bowling prices

The current standard bowling price is:

  • One game: R100 per person
  • Cover charge: R30 per person for adults and children
  • The R30 cover charge is redeemable on food and beverages.
  • The cover charge applies to people who bowl and people who are accompanying the group.

The cover charge is therefore worth factoring into your budget. It is not an additional bowling fee that disappears into the total; it can be used towards food or drinks bought at the venue.

What you get at Stadium on Main

The biggest advantage here is the number of activities under one roof.

Alongside bowling, Let’s Entertain U currently offers:

  • Laser Blast
  • Nine-hole crazy golf
  • Kidz Play indoor play area
  • Pappa G’s pizzeria
  • Strikers Lounge
  • Indoor golf simulation
  • Pool tables
  • Entertainment scoring on the bowling lanes

The bowling lanes use synthetic surfaces and QubicaAMF string pinsetting technology. The entertainment scoring system also makes it easier for casual players to follow the game.

Let’s Go Bowling rules and need-to-knows

This venue has a few rules worth knowing before arriving:

  • You do not need traditional bowling shoes.
  • Soft-soled, non-slip sports shoes, sneakers or non-slip socks are suitable.
  • Food and drinks from outside are not permitted.
  • Food and drinks can be purchased inside the venue.
  • Halaal-friendly food is available.
  • Alcohol is sold in the Strikers Lounge, but only to people aged 18 and over.
  • The R30 cover charge applies to both bowlers and non-bowlers and can be spent on food or drinks.
  • Online booking is the preferred booking method.

For parents with younger children, the Kidz Play area can be useful if a child is too young to enjoy a full bowling game. The venue also offers laser tag and crazy golf, which gives older children and teenagers alternatives between games.

Where to eat at Stadium on Main

You do not have to leave the building for food. Pappa G’s Pizzeria operates at Stadium on Main and serves pizzas, burgers and other casual food.

The venue also has the Strikers Lounge for drinks, while other restaurants operate within Stadium on Main. Korean Kitchen, for example, is located in the centre and serves Korean and international-style dishes.

Cavendish Square is also nearby if you prefer a larger selection of restaurants and cafés. Its current restaurant directory lists places such as Col’Cacchio, Mozambik, Mykonos Greek Taverna, Mugg & Bean, Nando’s and Bootlegger.

When bowling in Cape Town works particularly well

Bowling has an advantage over plenty of other group activities: people can talk between turns, the game gives everyone a reason to participate and nobody needs to be particularly athletic to join in.

Kids’ birthday parties

Both venues work well for children’s parties, particularly for primary-school children and older kids.

GrandWest gives you access to bowling plus arcade games, laser tag, ice skating and the wider entertainment complex. Stadium on Main offers bowling alongside Kidz Play, crazy golf and Laser Blast.

For a birthday with a mixed group of children, check the age suitability of the additional activities before booking the package.

Family outings

Bowling works nicely when parents, teenagers and children all need to be entertained at the same time.

GrandWest suits families who want to spend several hours at one destination. Stadium on Main works particularly well when the group wants to move between activities.

Team-building

Bowling gives colleagues a reason to compete without turning the day into a serious sporting event. GrandWest specifically markets its Magic Bowling setup for corporate functions and team building.

Stadium on Main can work well for teams that want to add laser tag, crazy golf or food to the outing.

School outings

Bowling can suit school groups because games are structured, indoor and easy to organise around turns. Stadium on Main has additional activities that can be combined with bowling, while GrandWest has several entertainment attractions within the same complex.

For school groups, arrange the booking well ahead of time and confirm the final package, supervision requirements, food arrangements and payment terms directly with the venue.

Teen outings

Both venues have plenty to keep teenagers occupied. GrandWest offers bowling, arcade games, laser tag, ice skating and cinema entertainment. Stadium on Main adds laser tag, crazy golf, pool, indoor golf and its Kidz Play facility.

Date nights and friend groups

Stadium on Main has a more compact social setup, with bowling, Pappa G’s and the Strikers Lounge in the same venue. GrandWest gives you a much larger choice of restaurants if you want dinner before or after your game.

Bowling in Cape Town: Which bowling venue suits which outing?

Choose GrandWest if:

  • You want the lower standard bowling price.
  • You are planning a longer family day out.
  • You want lots of restaurants in the same complex.
  • You want access to Cosmic Lighting.
  • You are arranging a corporate or team-building event.
  • Your group wants several activities in one destination.

Choose Stadium on Main if:

  • You are based in the Southern Suburbs.
  • You want bowling alongside several other indoor activities.
  • You like the idea of laser tag or crazy golf after bowling.
  • You want food at Pappa G’s without leaving the venue.
  • You prefer a smaller entertainment centre rather than a large casino complex.
  • You need an outing that can work for children, teenagers and adults.

For straightforward value, GrandWest has the cheaper standard bowling game. For an activity-packed outing where bowling is one part of the day, Stadium on Main gives you a strong mix of entertainment under one roof.

Whichever venue you choose, book ahead for birthdays, school groups, corporate outings and busy weekends. A casual two-person game is far easier to fit in than a lane full of children arriving with a birthday cake, party bags and very specific ideas about who gets to bowl first.
